Introduction

This handbook has been developed in the frame of the project "Networks of small and medium size companies (SME) along supply chains – environmental communication as an instrument for successful implementation of European Guidelines in SME in the Baltic States", which has been part funded by the German Federal Foundation for the Environment. The project was carried out in 2006-2007 by the Baltic Environmental Forum in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany.

The project aimed at increasing environmental performance and competitiveness of Baltic small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) operating in the supply chain of the furniture, printing, and metal industrial sectors. It focused on transfer of know-how on practical solutions on company level, especially the ones easily applicable for SMEs, to achieve compliance with environmental legislation and meet client demands as well as enhance communication routines along a supply chain, no matter inside the country or across borders.

During the project several series of trainings and seminars with practical home tasks and possibilities for know-how exchange (e.g. visit to the advanced company) took place. Based on these trainings and in further co-operation with companies, the project team has elaborated this handbook for small and medium size furniture, printing, and metal/wood processing companies to assist them in their everyday environmental routines as well as in future planning and progressive development.

Although many of the here presented recommendations and guidance was prepared for the selected branches, it may contain a lot of information useful for any small and medium sized industry to improve the environmental performance, and even saving costs.

This handbook is also available on CD (if you would like to get CD version, please approach Baltic Environmental Forum, contacts are provided under the section “Useful contacts”).
